Gansu is located in the northwestren part of China, bordering upon Shanxi,Sichuan,Qinghai,Xingjiang and Inner Mongolia.It covers an area of 454,000 square kilometers and has a population of 22.85 million, which is comprised of 41 nationalities.The provincial capital is Lanzhou which is the second largest city and an important industrial center in the northwest of china.
Gansu has a long history and splendid culture.Historic sites and scenic spots are spread over the province,including Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang known as oriental artstic treasure-house,Jiayuguan Pass,graves of HanDynasty,Giant Buddha,Temple in Zhangye,Leitai in wuwei,Western Xia Stele,Lamasery in Xiahe,Maiji Mountain Grottoes in Tianshui,Remains of Dadiwan in Qinan and Binglingsi Grottoes in Yongjing.
Gansu is also abundant in natural resources which hold out broad prospects. 64 kinds of mineral deposits have been verified.Its non-ferrous metals reserves are among the largest in the county and its exploitable hydroclectric reserves are estimated at 14 milliom kilowatts.
